Frequently Asked Questions
Where does the ride Start?
The ride starts and ends at Sakura Park. Read more about the various routes on our web site here.
I signed up for a leader-led ride, what do I do now?
If on your registration, you said yes when you were asked if you’d like to do the ride with a leader provided by NYCC, you don’t have to do anything else until you hear from our coordinator.
Based on your response to questions about which distance and what your average speed goal is, you will be added to an appropriate ride.
Can I have family members join me at the Finish Festival?
Unfortunately, we have a very large number of paying riders, and the capacity limits in the park combined with the cost of the meal preclude us from having invited unpaid guests. Of course, they are welcome to meet you outside the park and join you for the ride home.
Can’t make the ride and bought insurance. What do I do?
One of the benefits of Escape New York shifting back to Active.com from Escape New York is that they offer an insurance in case you can’t make the ride. The Escape New York ride has always been a rain or shine ride with a no refund policy.
If you paid for insurance, you should have received an e-mail from Active.com that confirmed your purchase and outlines how to proceed. If you are having a hard time, please write to them at support@active.com
If you did not buy insurance, you are able to claim the full amount of your registration fee as a tax deduction since all proceeds from the ride go to our causes and NYCC itself is a 501(c)3 charity.
Where do I park my car if I am driving from outside the city?
We will have hundreds of riders and volunteers, many of whom love our ride because they can typically ride over to and from Sakura Park if they live in the city or near enough.
But we also draw an audience from far away and within 50-100 miles of the city.
If you are driving to the ride start, make sure to leave ample time if your “hope” is to find parking. It’s a Saturday, and alternate side parking is not relevant so cars tend to be static. At the same time, people do come and go so you might get lucky.
You can search further afield and then ride over to the park entrance. Higher up on Riverside Drive and in the streets from Upper West Side (60s and up) - the side streets all have free parking.
Be careful on Broadway and most major avenues as they have meters that are limited to two hours and tickets are expensive. You can also use a parking tool to find local garages which may have favorable rates.
When will ENY 2023 be held?
Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 is the date for this year’s Escape New York ride.
I have dietary concerns
We have a commercial caterer who has supported our event since 2017. He has outlined 4 menu items to cater to most dietary sensitivities. If your questions are not answered by reading about our caterer here, please e-mail us at enyinfo@nycc.org and we will get you an answer to your question.
I signed up for one distance and want to do another
There are many ways to answer this question so rather than say “it depends”, be sure to ask our staff at any point along the way on the day of.
In the mean time, think about it this way.
Is this a RIDE or a RACE?
It’s definitely a RIDE. It’s a celebration as we draw to the close of another cycling season and celebrate the beginning of fall. Some of the folks doing longer distances and leaving early, will ride faster but we don’t offer any trappings of “a race”.
We encourage everyone to enjoy the ride and the opportunity to reach your target for a milestone ride of the season. And enjoy the festival that awaits you with great music, a tasty meal and good prizes in our raffle.
What % of the Gravel (65 mile) ride is Gravel versus Pavement?
Our “Dirty Spin” has about 12 miles of unpaved surface - all on very chill multi-use trails. That’s about 20% of the distance.
The dirt sections offer some of the most spectacular scenic riding you can do on a day ride from NYC, so you won't be disappointed.
I can’t make the ride. Can I have a refund?
Our ride has a rain or shine, no refund policy as we have to spend in advance of the ride.
If you bought the insurance option available from Active.com - you can follow the instructions on that confirmation e-mail on how to file your claim and get a refund from them.
Otherwise, we would be happy to issue you a fully tax deductible receipt as your registration fees will flow fully to our causes listed here.
We are truly sorry you can't make it and thank you for your support of the ride. We will be introducing an exciting new VIRTUAL option close to the ride, watch for it and you’ll be able to join that!
